Enjoy Your Sushi Now, Because It Won’t Exist By the End Of Our Lifetime

If we continue to overfish and you know, plunder the oceans and ruin everything, there will be no more sushi left to enjoy. And if Jiro Ono says it, we know it must be true.

At an event this week, Ono warned of the dying fish populations that will change the sushi game in the future — and have already changed sushi as we know it. Said Ono, according to Japan Times, “I told my young men three years ago sushi materials will totally change in five years … and now, little by little, such a trend is becoming reality.”

The fish in particular danger? Bluefin tuna, already a fish population in major decline, says Quartz. Thanks to its extreme popularity in sushi restaurants and rampant illegal fishing, some say the population may never recover. Other fish that are of concern, says Ono’s son Yoshikazu Ono, are the shellfish, like abalone and ark shell. And Foodbeast notes that nearly all wild-caught fish are in danger of disappearing altogether. So, we guess we’ll all just be eating seaweed someday? Joy. Humans, gotta ruin everything.
